Student Director Ivelina on the Action Center

As all previous guest lectures, this one brought a lot to our better understanding of what social entrepreneurship is. All lectures have contributed immensely to the core of the class and to our knowledge in the sphere of social entrepreneurship. At the Action Center I realized how great ideas can effectively be put into action and how great efforts can make people aware of global misfortunes like poverty and hunger. I enjoyed a lot the atmospehere and the way the Center is set up - not like an ordinary educational center, but rather like a center for communicating with people around the world - in terms of their ideas, personal stories and eperience. Moreover, I enjoyed the introduction movie, the creative headphones hanging from the ceiling and presenting Human rights in several languages (I was sorry that I could listen to it in my native language) and the idea with how much time people are eager to spend on making a difference about global poverty.

I really believe that places like the Action Center should continue to exist and become more in number on a global scale because to really understand a problem and become cautious about it, people need to be well educated first. Education should come as a priori and then action. Therefore, if we want to make people active and eager to help towards making the world a better place to live, we should all first think about educating them and making them aware of places like the Action Center.

Great place, great ideas, great people, amazing work!

The visit to the Action Center and our meeting with Robert Sherman was very insightful. I enjoyed Roberts’s explanation behind the philosophy of the Action Center: in order to solve the problem of world hunger, we need to address other issues that exasperate hunger. This multifaceted approach is basically a combination of the fast forward fund profiles: climate change, health, poverty alleviation, human rights. Depending on which issue is most prevalent in a given country, the alleviation of one issue in turn alleviates hunger in that community.

What was different about this specific site was the set-up of the office (actually it didn’t feel like an office at all). The level of interaction as a foundation for educating the public is a great way not only to bring awareness, but to initiate action, regardless if you want to donate a minute or a year of your time. It really puts this issue into perspective and makes that feeling that world hunger is too overwhelming for one individual to address irrelevant. It would be interesting to see if more organizations adopt this type of private-public interaction as the industry grows. It is a great way to connect the public with the issue on both a domestic and international level.

  2. Despite multiple strategies from the organizations such as Action Center and the high turnout of active citizens that are willing to combat the root causes of hunger and poverty, yet many people unfortunately enough do not join their forces to make these issues more visible and accessible. Action Center proved to carry out a terrific work in trying to combat these issues both nationally and internationally. Above all, what stroke my attention is that indeed there is no time to lose when dealing with hunger and poverty. Each minute is priceless! There are still many people around the world dying in the process, that there are many kids being deprived of education, sanitation, or even access to medicine. And that most of solutions to end these global challenges lay particularly on global citizens just because the world leaders many times do not comply with their obligations or even successful solutions to these issues.

  3. What I found most interesting about the Action Center was their recognition of the fact that different models and approaches have to be used depending on which area you are working in and what problems need to be addressed there. This is an approach which I believe will help in all fields of social entrepreneurship, and is of utmost importance when dealing with any developing countries. We must not forget that there is no one correct approach to development, and as development becomes a necessity in the coming years this philosophy will help greatly. The Action Center is a great combination of ideology and action, and I would recommend a visit to most everyone.
